Window Vinyl and Graphics for Shops and Offices: A Practical Guide

Your windows are some of the most valuable advertising space you have. They are at eye level, they face the street and they are seen by everyone who walks past. Window vinyl turns that space into signage, privacy screening or a full-colour display, usually for far less than a fascia sign.

This guide explains the main types of window vinyl and graphics, what each is best for, and what to think about before you order. It is written for shops, cafes, offices and clinics in Brighton, Hove and across Sussex.

The Main Types of Window Vinyl

Cut vinyl lettering

Letters, logos and shapes cut from solid-colour vinyl and applied to the glass. This is the classic choice for business names, opening hours, phone numbers and websites. It is crisp, durable and leaves the rest of the glass clear, so the window still shows off what is inside.

Printed window graphics

Full-colour digitally printed vinyl, used for photography, illustrations, promotions and brand patterns. Printed graphics can cover part of a window or the whole pane, and can be applied to the inside or the outside of the glass depending on the design.

Frosted and etched-effect vinyl

A translucent vinyl that looks like sandblasted or etched glass. It lets light in while blocking a clear view, which makes it ideal for offices, meeting rooms, clinics and salons. Logos and patterns can be cut out of the frost, or the frost can be cut into bands at eye level so the space still feels open.

One-way vision (perforated) vinyl

A printed vinyl with a pattern of small holes. From outside you see the full graphic; from inside you can still see out. It works because the outside is usually brighter than the inside. At night, when the inside is lit, the effect reverses and people can see in more easily, which is worth knowing before you rely on it for privacy.

Window decals and stickers

Smaller pieces such as accepted payment logos, review badges, opening hours and seasonal offers. These are often added alongside a main scheme and can be swapped as offers change.

What Window Graphics Are Best For

  • Branding a shopfront without the cost of a new fascia, or adding detail the fascia does not cover.
  • Promotions and seasonal campaigns that change throughout the year.
  • Privacy for ground-floor offices, treatment rooms and staff areas.
  • Hiding a fit-out while a shop is being refurbished, with a "coming soon" graphic that builds interest.
  • Safety manifestation on large glazed doors and screens, so people can see the glass. Manifestation is a requirement in many workplaces under building and workplace regulations, and it can be designed to carry your branding rather than plain dots.

Inside or Outside the Glass?

Most window graphics are applied to the inside face, where they are protected from weather, cleaning and vandalism. Some designs need to go on the outside, for example frosted vinyl on a door that is cleaned from inside, or one-way vision film, which is usually fitted externally. Graphics can also be reverse-printed so they read correctly from the street when applied inside. We will advise on the best option for your windows.

How Long Does Window Vinyl Last?

Good quality cast vinyl applied inside the glass can last many years. Printed graphics and vinyl applied to the outside of the glass have a shorter life, depending on sun exposure and how the glass is cleaned. Promotional graphics are often printed on cheaper, easily removable vinyl because they will only be up for a few weeks.

Do Window Graphics Need Permission?

Window graphics are usually simpler from a planning point of view than fascia or projecting signs. If your premises is a listed building or sits in a conservation area, it is still worth checking with the local council before covering large areas of glass, particularly on a historic shopfront. Some landlords and shopping centres also have their own rules on window displays. Our advertisement consent guide explains the wider rules for business signs.

Design Tips for Shop Window Graphics

  • Keep the message short. People read a window in a few seconds while walking past. Name, what you do and one call to action is usually enough.
  • Leave some glass clear. A window that is completely covered can make a shop look closed. Leaving the view inside open often draws more people in.
  • Put key information at eye level. Opening hours and contact details work best between roughly waist and head height, near the door.
  • Match the fascia. Use the same colours and typeface as your main sign so the shopfront reads as one design. See our shop front signs guide for more.
  • Think about night-time. If you trade after dark, test how the graphic looks with the lights on inside.

What our clients say
about us

“extremely knowledgeable”

Couldn’t ask for a lovelier guy to work with on my designs. Lewis is extremely knowledgeable of the signage business. He’s highly skilled. And produces great quality branding and signs. It’s obvious he wants the signage to look the best it can. Highly trustworthy. Good value. Don’t go anywhere else.

Nicholas Martin, SUSSEX

“odyseasigns were absolutely incredible.”

It is very rare you get to have anyone as attentive and meticulous as him. He was there for every step and despite myself making multiple changes on the road we ended up with some really amazing signage that has helped the business in its general appearance and branding hugely. A really outstanding service with truly great results.
